Conservation Area

Marple Bridge
has been designated as a Conservation Area since 1974. The conservation area centres on the bridge, and stretches from Brabyns Park, along Lower Fold to the former gas works site in the north, and down to Longhurst Lane in the south.

Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest where it is desirable to preserve or enhance the character or appearance of that area. In addition to the quality of buildings, there are many other factors which contribute to the value of a conservation area – the historic layout of roads, public spaces, parks, trees, street furniture, street surfaces, views and vistas – these are all significant contributors to the appearance of an area and give it its special character. Local authorities have the statutory duty and power to designate conservation areas under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. The special character and appearance of the area is based on local criteria rather than national importance. Within a conservation area there are extra planning controls over demolition, minor developments and the protection of trees.
